American alternative-rock band, The Breeders, was formed in 1989 by Kim Deal of Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. Thought the years the group changed its lineup, with Kim Deal being the only standard member. Their first album came out in 1990 under the name Pod. It failed to achieve any commercial success, but despite that, it was critically acclaimed. Last Splash album which came out in 1990 is the most successful The Breeders release to date. It is known for the single named ‘Cannonball.’

Formation of The Breeders

The band was formed when Kim Deal, the bassist of Pixies at the time, started a new project with Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly and Carrie Bradley, violinist, and vocalist in Boston band Ed’s Redeeming Qualities. The three recorded a demo based on materials that Deal wrote during Pixies Surfer Tour in Europe.

They didn’t have a regular drummer for the recording of the demo. David Narcizo, Mickey Bones, and Carl Haarer all participated on the record. At that point, they still didn’t adopt the name Breeders. Instead, they were known as “Boston Girl Super-Group.” They started using the name Breeders only when their demo was well accepted by independent record label 4AD.

Pod (1990–91)

Their first album Pod came out on May 28th, 1990. It was recorded in ten days in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like we mentioned it didn’t bode well with the audience, so it missed on commercial success. But, more importantly, critically it was a complete success. It was so good that Kurt Cobain stated that this was one of his favorite records ever.
